Girl group 2NE1 recorded an all-time high record for K-Pop on Billboard charts, and main producer Yang Hyun Suk has been named a 'power man'. YG Entertainment's influence is growing in the United States. Add Psy and Big Bang to that mix, and YG has much to be proud of for its greatness in America, which is the center of the world's music market. So why is YG so strong in the United States?
YG's has a powerful fandom not only in America but of course Asia, as well Europe, Latin America, and everywhere worldwide. The reason is just one. It's because they're putting forth musicians that create music that appeals to fans worldwide, music that they can fall into. A significant portion of YG's main focus has been hip-hop, and hip-hop fans send their most fervent cheers to this company. The most recent example is 2NE1's comeback album. On March 5th Billboard noted that 2NE1 reached a new record in America, and reported that their newest album Crush ranked number 62 on Billboard 200 Charts. They also revealed that 2NE1's title song "Come Back Home" ranked number 5 on the World Digital Songs chart. Psy took the number 2 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 charts with his single album Gangnam Style. 2NE1's latest 61st ranking on Billboard 200 Album Chart with Crush is the highest record of any K-Pop album. In addition to the music itself, YG used dynamic and creative marketing techniques to penetrate foreign markets. They used social networking services. From early on YG's Yang Hyun Suk took advantage of the world's largest video site YouTube and posted Big Bang and 2NE1's music videos so that it could spread throughout the world. Instead of simply counting on Korea's broadcast TV programs, Yang Hyun Suk took matters into his own hands to reach global fans. In order for this to work, YG had to invest blockbuster production costs for the music videos. With each album, YG boldly chose 3-4 title tracks and produced music videos for those songs all at once. He has a rule, "If it's not perfect, we won't release it," and it's been used to highlight and help create some of the greatest artists. Thanks to these techniques, Yang Hyun Suk has been named as one of the International Power Players by Billboard magazine, and has ranked next to Simon Cowell and the like. He was the only Korean to make the list among music's business leaders that are most influential globally. Billboard introduced Yang Hyun Suk by saying, "Yang Hyun Suk was a K-Pop star that debuted with Seo Taiji and the Boys in 1992, who established Korea's pop genre." They continued, "After he became a producer, he started Psy's 'Gangnam Style' syndrome and introduced Big Bang's world tour, which gathered 800,000 people across 12 countries, and G-Dragon's Asia tour, which gathered 570,000 people, as well as 771,000 people with Big Bang's 6 Dome Tour," and explained YG's global influence. A YG Entertainment rep told MyDaily on the 10th, "It is true that Psy has finished working on his new album and is in talks for his comeback date. But because there are a lot of fluctuating circumstances, it is too early to reveal the official date." "His comeback set for February has been postponed. We can't guarantee anything yet. Although it is highly likely that he will be the second YG artist to make a comeback in 2014 following 2NE1, it has not been confirmed yet. Another rep sounded more certain that Psy was indeed the second YG artist to come back this year, stating to MBN, "Following 2NE1, Psy has been confirmed to be the second YG artist to make a comeback this year. YG plans to unleash the comebacks of Big Bang, Psy, 2NE1, and also the debuts of WINNER and Akdong Musician." Psy already filmed his music video back in January, featuring cameos of Snoop Dogg and his labelmate G-Dragon, but there hasn't been much update since then other than that the album has been delayed as typical of YG-style to take their time to bring only the best. The list is created based on several criterion, i.e. artist/s' exposure, professionalism, and earnings (domestic and international), and is quite similar to U.S. Forbes' "Celebrity 100". PSY, who claimed the top spot last year, drops down to No. 13 as nine-member girl group Girls' Generation reclaimed the spot. This was despite having an overall successful year last year, with "Gentleman" debuting at No. 1 on "K-Pop Hot 100", placing 5th on "Billboard Hot 100", and being 2013's most viewed video on Youtube. But fans need not wait long for his big comeback as a new music video is in the works featuring none other than Snoop Dogg and labelmate G-Dragon. Meanwhile, BIGBANG climbs three spots from the fifth slot last year placing them at No. 2. The group focused on solo activities last year with four of its members, namely G-Dragon, Taeyang, Seungri, and TOP, releasing new music in Korea. As a group, they held several concerts, as did their leader G-Dragon whose "Coup D'etat, Pt. 1" EP charted on "Billboard 200" within the week of its release. Also spotted on the list is 2NE1, one of the new additions, who placed at No. 24. Source: Billboard © 2013 YG Family Philippines. All rights reserved. *Omitted non-YG related [일간스포츠 김진석] The mega-hit music video ‘Gangnam Style’ by PSY, aged 37, is about to attract a sensational 1.9 billion viewers. The current number on Feb 6 stands at 1.899 billion views. He only needs an extra million to reach 1.9 billion. He, of course, stands at the very to on the YouTube ranking. The music video, since its revelation on July 15 2012, attracted a whopping 100 million views in just 51 days, on Sept 4. Last year it recorded 1.5 billion views in April, proving its undying popularity. If the record hits 1.9 billion on Feb 7, then it would be a record broken in 573 days. Last month PSY received the grand prize of the 28th Golden Disk Awards, which makes it a 2nd one in a row. At that time he announced the new song “is almost at its completion. You will soon see a very fun song, and I am doing my best to show what PSY has got.” Recently he finished filming his latest music video with Snoop Dogg at a bathhouse, billiard room and singing room. His song will be released as early as the end of February, or in March at the latest.
