Most artists focus on one title track, but YG Entertainment’s musicians play the game with more than 2. On April 7, AKMU’s debut album “PLAY” was unveiled. The two very different songs “200%” and “MELTED” were the titles. YG promised that the final title track will be chosen by the fans. On April 14, it was confirmed their final title track is “GIVE LOVE.” AKMU is currently in Japan, filming a music video for the final title track. 2NE1, who released a 2nd full album in February, also had two title tracks “COME BACK HOME” and “GOTTA BE YOU.” When GD unveiled his full album last September, there were whopping 4 title songs. With “BLACK (Feat. JENNIE KIM),” “WHO YOU?” “CROOKED,” and “NILIRIA,” GD performed dynamically on different TV channels. Going further back, LEEHI’s debut album had “IT’S OVER” and “ROSE” as double titles, while EPIK HIGH’s 7th full album had “UP (Feat. BOM)” and “DON’T HATE ME.” On this, YG’s founder YANG told TV Report, “Title tracks are based on filming music videos. I have always thought music videos are very important. When an artist releases a new song, the first impression they have on the public is the most important. Thus music videos that are exposed before TV show performances are that much more significant.” So that is the reason YANG puts so much effort on music videos. K-Pop videos are watched by fans across the globe through YouTube and other channels. They learn the song through these videos, which leads to a creation of fandom. The best example is PSY’s “GANGNAM STYLE.” “International fans show great interest in YG artists like PSY, BIGBANG and 2NE1. In the past, music was about listening and feeling it. But now the visual part has become important. Many commented that AKMU’s music video of “MELTED” was like watching a film. This is why we do not hold back on investing in music videos, which will help the artists and the songs stand out.” YG artists prefer multiple title tracks, and they film music videos for each one. They reduce the portion of TV promotion, and instead, strengthen the actual contents to fulfill the satisfaction of fans home and abroad.
YANG said with confidence, “Unlike TV appearances, music videos can have longer-lasting power. As things change quickly, the system is changing as well. People respond to this. It is important to apply these changes for the artists. YG aims to make bold investments in music videos, so the music can expand through a different route.” 2014. 4. 16.
