Why CL’s Success is Good for K-pop

YG CEO Yang Hyun Suk was right about CL after all.

Prior to the release of CL’s “THE BADDEST FEMALE” Yang Hyun Suk expressed his thoughts about the song, saying “People may find the song a bit too strange. It is a type of hip hop rarely attempted by K-pop artists, even less by a solo female artist. But I think that a large following will form after a while because the song is so catchy.”

CL’s “THE BADDEST FEMALE” ended up taking over all music charts 3 hours upon release. Certainly, it may have been largely contributed by YG’s all-out advertising effort. But when CL took the number one spot on ‘Inkigayo’ on June 9, that speculation lost its grounds.

For K-pop, there are several reasons why CL’s victory is a positive sign.

First, it has become increasingly difficult for solo female artists to take the number one spot on music shows with the rise of idol groups. Of course, CL is a member of an idol group, but the general consensus regarding her success as a solo artist is that the main driving force was her music, not her star power as 2NE1.

Also, CL got to the top with a traditional hip hop song that has almost rarely seen the light of day in K-pop. In slow beat, Dubstep and Dougie, CL re-introduced the popular American sounds to K-pop by adding appropriate Korean cultural sprinkles, resulting in a mix of familiarity and novelty.

Lastly, CL did not spread herself too thin by staging several performances in a week. Instead, she stuck with only one music show, ‘Inkigayo,’ and only performed twice in a span of nearly two weeks. Holding out to music shows is not something every artist can afford to do since they are often at the mercy of show associates when it comes to reserving a spot on stage. But for once, it is nice to see a big-name artist not overdo and overplay her performance.
